Do I need to be flexible or experienced in yoga to participate in classes? Yoga is a practice and discipline available for everyone at any stage of life, experience, and health. Yoga students are encouraged to practice at their own pace. Gently developing muscle tone and releasing tensions from the body and mind allows the body to relax and experience flexibility. If you have never taken yoga you should attend a gentle/beginner class and from there discuss with your instructor when you feel ready for a moderate class.
What are the benefits of practicing yoga in a yoga studio/center environment? (versus a gym, continuing ed classes, etc) The space/environment in a yoga center is conducive and dedicated to yoga practice. The space is serene, clean and organized. There are tools such as mats, blankets, pillows, blocks and straps to enhance and deepen your experience. You are guaranteed instruction by an experienced certified yoga instructor who will provide you with individual attention. Each instructor will address your particular needs and questions. In a yoga studio you can experience a practice that is progressive and integrative.
How long will it take me to feel the benefits of yoga practice? You may feel an immediate shift in your body/mind state after the first class. The layering of benefits will continue as you continue to attend classes and begin to integrate your practice in your daily routine. Everyone has different issues and tendencies in their body/mind state so continual attention to developing new habits and releasing the old will provide a greater degree of health and wellbeing. Yoga is not a drop-in class experience it is a discipline that is meant to be practiced for years and with regular attendance. Discuss your experiences with your instructor. Keep a yoga journal documenting your benefits, noting any new experiences, etc. For ex. – sleep/dreams, eating, feeling/emotion, energy level.
What do I need to bring to class, how should I dress, can I eat or drink prior to class? Mats and all equipment are available for your comfort during class, please feel free to bring your own mat. Come with an open mind and heart ready for practice and learning. Wear comfortable, clean, layered clothing that you can easily move around in. Do not eat a heavy meal at least 2 hours prior to or after class time. If you need to eat something, eat very lightly- fruit, yogurt, etc. Do not drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks before or after class. Come to class hydrated-drink water prior to, during and after class. Listen to your bodies’ signals!!! Your body is a wealth of wisdom, listen deeply to what it is communicating to you.
What is the etiquette for attendance at Prema Shanti Yoga? All classes are held by pre-registration prior to attending first class. Some classes require the instructors’ permission to join. Arrive on time and a minimum of 10 min. prior to start of class to settle in, taken care of essentials and begin to relax. If you arrive late you may be denied entrance to class. It is disruptive to students and unsafe to arrive late. Do not wear heavy perfumes or heavily scented body lotions. A freshly showered body is a perfect way to settle into a relaxing practice. Always practice kindness, courtesy with your fellow yoga students.
